15 Moravian College Students Selected for Prestigious United Nations-backed Millennium Fellowship

BETHLEHEM, PA, August 22, 2018: Today, Moravian College announced that fifteen students have been selected for the Millennium Fellowship, presented by United Nations Academic Impact and Millennium Campus Network (MCN.) The  is a leadership development program that empowers students to advance the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals on campus and in their communities.

“The entire campus community is extremely proud of the Moravian students named Millennium Fellows; this is a tremendous honor,” said Bryon Grigsby, president of Moravian College. “Being selected for this esteemed fellowship is a testament to their hard work, leadership, and commitment to sustainable development. It is also a testament to the quality of student Moravian College produces.  The Moravian Faculty are able to harness outstanding talent.”

Student leaders from 285 campuses across 57 nations applied to join the select Class of 2018.  Only 30 campuses across 13 nations (11%) were selected to host 530 Millennium Fellows this year. Millennium Fellows’ projects are projected to positively impact the lives of more than 310,000 people worldwide.

In their application, the Moravian College Fellows proposed “The 1742 Model: The Sustainable Development Goals in the Lehigh Valley: A Comprehensive Program for Education and Action.” The model will build upon themes of sustainability, peace and justice, and poverty and inequality with three areas of particular focus (food reclamation and food insecurity, housing insecurity, and LGBTQ+ outreach and partnership) that have been identified as areas of need in the Lehigh Valley region of Pennsylvania. These themes are also aligned with the college’s InFocus program.

“The students chosen for this very competitive program have shown true leadership in many different areas at Moravian,” said Diane Husic dean, School of Natural and Health Sciences at Moravian College. “They’ve all demonstrated a real commitment to the sustainable development goals and this fellowship will be an amazing experience for them.”
