Bethlehem, Pa., September 29, 2015—Moravian College will feature a production of Marx in Soho, a seventy-minute, one-man play written by renowned historian Howard Zinn, on Wednesday, October 7 at 7 p.m. in the Haupert Union Building’s Prosser Auditorium. Directed by John Doyle, Marx in Soho is part of the Iron Age Theatre’s 2015-2016 season and is touring nationally. Bob Weick, a highly praised actor with area ties, will lead the production in its title role. The performance is free and the public is welcomed to attend.
In Marx in Soho, Karl Marx comes back to life to clear his name and defend his controversial ideas in the face of present-day social issues and American politics. During the course of the one-act play, Marx tackles the American education system, the wealthy ruling class, corporations, prisons, the media, and political rhetoric in a way that transcends the realm of a political discussion and turns the theater into an open classroom in which the audience will not only be entertained, but engaged. The production has been described as moving, passionate, heartfelt, dynamic, and humorous. Its educational potential has been lauded by educators and students alike.
Weick, who will bring Marx to life on the stage of Prosser Auditorium, is a veteran performer in the Lehigh Valley and beyond. He has performed with the Philadelphia Theatre Company and the companies of the Iron Age Theatre, the Triangle Theatre, the Philadelphia Fringe Festival, and Allentown’s Civic Theatre In 2003, Weick earned a Barrymore Nomination, Best Ensemble, for his portrayal of the Antarctic explorer Captain Robert Falcon Scott.
Howard Zinn is considered to be America’s leading progressive historian. He was the chair of the History Department at Spelman College in Atlanta and professor emeritus at Boston University. He was an avid lecturer and the author of numerous books, including A People’s History of the United States. Marx in Soho was published in 1999. Zinn passed away in 2010.
