Bethlehem, Pa., March 30, 2016鈥擜n admissions group from Moravian College visited Freedom High School on Thursday, March 31 at 8:30 to inform student Destiny Rivera that she has been selected to receive the full-scholarship to Moravian College. The same group will visit Liberty High School on Friday, April 1 at 8:30 p.m. and join with BASD SuperIntent Dr. Jospeh J. Roy and others to inform Alejandra Lara and her family that she was selected to receive a full-scholarship to Moravian College.

In December, Moravian College announced that it would offer, in partnership with the Bethlehem Area School District (BASD), a full-tuition, four-year scholarship to a qualified Liberty High School graduating senior and a Freedom High School graduating senior.  The Superintendent鈥檚 Scholarship is an outgrowth of an agreement between Dr. Bryon L. Grigsby, President of Moravian College, and Dr. Joseph J. Roy, Superintendent of Schools, BASD.  The Scholarship will be offered annually by Moravian College and begin for students entering for the Fall 2016 semester.

鈥淭he Superintendent's Scholarship is one more way Moravian College gives back to the Bethlehem community and its residents,鈥 said President Grigsby. 鈥淢oravian is proud to be a partner with the city and to work with Mayor Donchez, Superintendent Roy, and the Bethlehem Area School District to make the quality of life that much better for its residents. Since 1742, Moravian has been dedicated to the education of its local community."

When announcing the scholarship, Superintendent Roy said, 鈥淭his scholarship will transform the lives of two BASD graduates each and every year. I am proud to extend the district's close partnership with the College and I appreciate President Grigsby's vision and determination to make this commitment to our students and our school community."

Students applying for the Superintendent鈥檚 Scholarship must meet certain criteria and be accepted to Moravian College as full-time, traditional undergraduate students for the fall semester immediately following high school graduation. They must have attended Liberty or Freedom High School for at least their junior and senior years and demonstrate evidence of meaningful service to the larger community. Students are required to submit a scholarship application, including an essay, in which the applicant describes why his/her experiences, passion and purpose are predictors of future academic success, leadership, and service at Moravian College. In addition, families must complete of the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and release it to Moravian College. For more information, visit: www.moravian.edu/BASDscholar.
