MU Spotlight 20/20
Jessica Buttner ’19
What is your role at the college and what is something many may not know about the work you do?
I am a first year student pursuing a double major in Political Science and Business. At ɫ, I serve as the Parliamentarian for our United Student Government, a Twenty Six Point Ambassador, the Class of 2019 Homecoming Ambassador, organize the 1742 Experience, and I am a member of Habitat for Humanity and Emerging Leaders. I am also looking forward to being a team leader of this year's Spring Service Staycation. Something many may not know about the work that I do is that I helped organize the events for National Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week.
My favorite spot on campus is…
The third floor of Reeves Library. I love this place because I can come here to relax, get some studying done, and admire the University's beauty all at the same time. I love sitting by the windows with a cup of tea in one hand and my textbook in another.
What’s your favorite ɫ tradition?
Parading over to the football stadium for Homecoming because it brings a bunch of different people together to celebrate something we all love and express our school pride.
One thing that many of my colleagues don’t know about me outside of my ɫ responsibilities is …
That I am a first generation college student. I am sharing this with you to remind you that anything is possible if you work hard and set your mind to it.
My typical weekend goes something like this:
Of course studying and catching up on both sleep and Netflix, but also just spending time with my friends. My favorite times are when all of my friends are together and we play games, sit by a fire, and watch movies.
What’s your favorite thing to do when you’re not on campus?
Take time to reconnect with my family and friends because there are so many important people in my life who bring great memories, happiness and laughter.
Finish this sentence: “When I grow up, I want to be _____.”
A United States Senator because I have a passion to serve our society to benefit others and make a positive impact on our country as a whole.
Who is your hero? Why?
My mom is my hero because she's led me to the person I am today. Without her, I do not know where I would be.
What is the best advice you have ever received?
The best advice I have ever received was delivered by a speaker at a university a few years ago. He said: "Never forget to tell someone that you love them. Over use the words 'I love you,' because you can never say it enough. You never know when, and if, it is the last time you will see a person." I use this advice everyday of my life. Life is too short to not tell the most important people in your life that you love them.
I can never resist a good _______.
Laugh. I love making the best of every situation and enjoying the people I am with and whatever I am doing.
What makes you happy?
Seeing others live life to their fullest potential. Life is all about adventure and opportunities! Those who strive to get the most out of their lives inspire me to do the same.
