MU Spotlight 20/20

Tamara Garraway

What is your role at the college and what is something many may not know about the work you do?

I am a full-time Business Management major. I am the chair of the planning committee for the Black Student Union, a representative for United Student Government. I also hold work study position in the marketing department, the center for intercultural advancement and global inclusion. My favorite role besides being heavily involved in the Black Student Union is being a P.R.I.D.E Mentor to my mentee Brianna Myers.

My favorite spot on campus is…

My favorite spot on campus is the Diversity House because its one of the only places I can find my busy friends and mentors to relax and have fun in one spot !

What’s your favorite ÑÇÖÞÇéÉ« tradition?

My favorite college tradition is heritage day because we get a day off to meaningful service work in the community which a great stress reliever.

My typical weekend would go something like this:

My typical weekend would be me creating a task list for each day of the weekend  . I would forget I made a task list because a friend or often times my mother would suggest we go out for fresh air (a.k.a spend money I'm saving) real quick which really means all day. My Sunday would be the day I realized I have a weekend worth of things to do and finally do it.

Have you given or received a #MyMoPaw yet?

I received a MoPaw from Liliana Madrid and it made me smile because she is usually running a mad dash in heels across campus because she is so busy. The fact that she put the time and effort in writing me a MoPaw meant more than the actually paper.

What’s your favorite thing to do when you’re not on campus?

My favorite thing to do when I am away from campus is hang out with my mom because hands down she is one of the funniest people I know...even when she is reaching for my last nerve.

Who is your hero? Why?

My heroes would be my mother and aunts. This group of women are my heroes because they don't stop giving to their children and family members. Their selflessness is admirable. I can not begin to even imagine myself in my current position in life without their prayers, support and love.

What sound do you love, and why?

I love the sound of Soca music. Soca music just puts me in a great mood that brightens up my day. For those who don't know my family is from Trinidad and the way to a Trini's heart is Soca music.

What's your favorite ice cream flavor?

My favorite ice cream is great nut ice cream from a company called "Taste The Tropics", because its a classic Caribbean ice cream but it reminds me of my childhood growing up in East Flatbush in Brooklyn, NY.

What makes you happy?

I am happiest when I am helping those around me reach their full potential. It sounds corny but I love when my friends and family are challenging themselves to reach new personal heights, I love to be the person they tell when they overcome a challenge. I want to win this thing called life and I won't win until my family and friends win too!
