Zora Martin Felton Symposium
Mission Statement
The purpose of the Felton Symposium is to promote the intellectual and educational development of women of color, to engage in meaningful conversations around important issues that promote positive well-being, to identify effective strategies for personal and professional success, and to create a network of empowered leaders.
Outcomes
Our experiential workshops and discussions:
Elevate Confidence and Self-Esteem
Empower girls to believe in their abilities and potential.
Equip high school girls with the tools to overcome challenges and setbacks.
Promote a positive self-image and body positivity among high school girls.
Recognize and celebrate the achievements of high school girls in academics, sports, arts, and community service.
Increase awareness of physical and mental health issues specific to high school girls.
Introduce mindfulness and stress management techniques to help girls cope with stressors and promote overall well-being.
Promote building and maintaining healthy relationships, addressing topics such as communication, consent, and boundaries.
Increase Awareness of Educational Opportunities
High school girls become more informed about various educational paths, including STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) fields, arts, and humanities.
Provide opportunities for girls to develop leadership skills through workshops, seminars, and hands-on projects.
Encourage goal-setting activities that allow girls to set and achieve personal and academic goals.
Empower girls to make informed financial decisions throughout their lives.
Introduce budgeting skills and saving habits among high school girls.
Introduce fundamental financial concepts such as interest, credit, and investments.
Increase Awareness of Social Issues
Raise awareness about social issues affecting girls globally, such as gender inequality, discrimination, and lack of opportunities.
Promote media literacy to help girls critically assess societal expectations and stereotypes.
Foster critical thinking skills that enable girls to question assumptions, analyze information, and form their own opinions about social issues.
Facilitate the formation of supportive networks among high school girls, fostering friendships and mentorship opportunities.
Facilitate the creation of peer support networks, allowing girls to share experiences and provide emotional support to one another.
Establish resources and tools that continue to support high school girls beyond the symposium.
Event Information
The Symposium: Empowering Women of Color, named after the first African American graduate from Moravian College for Women, is a full day symposium for high school aged girls and young women of color.
